The World’s Greatest Bowhunter

Chuck Adams is the greatest bowhunter of our time. Not only is he the best known bowhunter of our time, he is also the most widely published. At 61 years old, Chuck has more than 5300 magazine articles published and 11 full length books.
Born and raised in a small town in northern California, about 90 miles north of Sacramento called Chico; Chuck followed his father and grandfather around from the time he could walk. At the age of 12, Chuck was legal to hunt deer in California; he shot his first one in 3 days on public land. This, Chuck reports in an interview with PJ DelHomme from 2008, is what led him to archery hunting. He wanted to “hunt more, and kill less.” Without much literature on bowhunting at the time he read everything he could from Fred Bear, and learned mostly by trial and error. It took Chuck three years before he was able to take a deer with bow and arrow.
Since those early days, Chuck has come quite a long way. He now holds more records, than any other archery hunter, with the three major clubs: Pope and Young, Boone and Crockett, and Safari Club International. He has 10 Boone and Crockett club entries, 189 Safari Club entries, and twice as many as any other hunter Pope and Young entries, with 122 official entries and almost 40 pending entries. He has held archery world records in: Sitka Blacktail, Couse Whitetail, Mountain Caribou, American Bison, and American Elk. He attributes his success, largely, to his schedule.
“I got right out of college, went through the masters program and taught at Chico State University in my hometown.” After teaching college English for a few years, Chuck decided that he didn’t like that school started at the same time as hunting season. So, he quit and became a free-lance writer. “My dad is a retired college professor in English, and I grew up in a strong English family. My mom was really adept at writing and reading. I got sidetracked and started teaching. Then I just woke up one day and said man, you know if I’m really gonna do it I need to try what I always wanted to do.” Chuck says he wrote a very aggressive letter to the editor of Peterson’s Hunting Magazine, explaining that he had noticed several typos, and that he was an English Major, an English Professor, and that he could clean the magazine up. He was hired over the phone. He was the associate editor for two years, and then he became a full-time writer. This allows him to work seven days a week for eight and a half months, then spend the rest of his time bowhunting.
Over the years, Chuck Adams has had many great awards bestowed upon him. Chuck is the youngest inductee into the “big three” bowhunting halls of fame: Safari Club International’s Bowhunting Hall of Honor, the National Bowhunter’s Hall of Fame, and the Archery Hall of Fame. Less than a dozen people have been inducted into all three, Fred Bear being one. Chuck has also received Bowhunting World Reader’s Choice Award for 17 years in a row for most popular writer. He also is the author of the two best-selling books in the history of archery. Chuck received an honorary doctorate degree for his writing in the archery field from Penn State University.
Chuck appears 50 to 60 times a year on television, being affiliated with multiple shows. He is also a consultant for countless archery companies, with signature lines with some of the best known manufacturers: Easton Technical Products, Hoyt Archery, Bill Jordan’s Realtree, and Bushnell Outdoor Products just to name a few.
When PJ DelHomme asked Chuck what he is most proud of after all these years, he replied, “To be honest, I’m most proud of the writing.” He says that he has tried to show people throughout his career how to enjoy bowhunting as much as he does.
Chuck says hunting never gets old for him. He says he loves the challenge, and the physical activity.” If anything, I don’t get to hunt as much as I want.” So, I guess we can look forward to many more articles, and world records from Chuck Adams, the greatest bowhunter of our time.
