I was lucky to be done a little after 6 and had a beer in hand by 645. I scouted the area out and knew roughy where the birds were roosted and where they were traveling. I called very lightly first thing in the morning. Maybe one or two times just as soon as they woke up. After they flew down I still did not call. I could hear birds all around me and they seemed to be getting closer so I just held off with calling. After a little while the gobbles were working away from me. So I began to call a little but not real aggressive. They hammered it. I stopped calling and I was ready for them to come in to check it out. Yet again they eventually starting working away. So this time I started to call and I was aggressive. I called often this time. He came running in this time and at about 30 yards there he stood all strutted up. I saw his beard and knew he was a good bird. I gave one more little call and he answered and he put his head up. When he did this my 870 introduced himself with some 5 shot. He did not seem to like it and he ended up taking a nap. It was a great morning. The down fall is my season is over. Time to get ready for whitetails. I wish everyone luck the rest of the season and hope to read their stories soon. Port, try to stop by when you get a chance. |
