It was the last day of NJ 6 day Firearm otherwise known as shotgun season. Port, Big Dave and myself had been sitting all day just itching for some action. Port called me on the radio and said he had seen some deer head into this bottom where we see deer all the time but the have yet to head out. The problem with that bottom is the deer can hang there all day. So I came up with a plan that about an hour before the end of legal light I would get out of my tree stand and put on a little one man drive through the bottom and make something happen. Everybody agreed with that plan so it was on. That time came and as I said I packed up and climbed out of my stand. I hit the ground, loaded "Ole Bessy" and I was off. I didn't even make it five feet from my tree and BOOM ! ! Sounded like it was right in my direction, I knew it was close, so I ducked behind a tree and got ready for some action. Nothing, I waited a few minutes and decided to call on the radio to find out what was going on and weather I should continue with my plan. No answer, no clue who shot, then all of the sudden HEY JAY, there's a bunch of deer heading out of the bottom and they are coming your way ! ! ! I couldn't see a thing from where I was standin so I quickly ran up the hill about 10 yards to a double tree and stood in the middle of them. Now in a great position I could see all the way to the bottom and I also had a few great spots for a shot. I had a buck tag and a doe tag so I really didn't care what it was, I was gonna kill! As they came up through the woods I could tell the path they were on was going to be a long shot, especially for buckshot, but it's the last few minutes of the last day and it was worth a shot. As they were coming up the hill I saw one deer that stood out from the others, it had a bigger body than the rest and was just a hare off of the path all of the other deer were on. Target aquired, shooting lanes, DAMN! I only have one spot where I can shoot, it's gonna have to be fast and accurate. These deer were on a mission, they were stretched out, low to the ground, and running with all they had. As the approached my spot of oppertunity, off with the safety, I hope I have the right lead on them, and BOOM ! ! All the deer took off in a different direction except one, the one I shot at, It ran down the old carrige road straight at me. I cranked another round in the chamber, bead on chest, finger on trigger, and there's a house about 1/4 mile up the road in that direction, safety ON ! The deer then turn about 40 yards from me and heads up the hill and I still can't get a shot because of the road and all of the sudden CRASH ! ! ! Through all of the excitement I never even looked for head gear, I never had time, I was so focused on my target and making the shot. right after my shot the radio was screaming in my pocket, Jay ! ! Jay ! ! What did you shoot ? What's going on ? I was still in amazement that I made an 80+ yard shot with buckshot and killed. I knew "Ole Bessy" could shoot but, WOW ! ! ! I ran up the hill and to my amazement it was a nice buck and 4 out of 12 pellets found their mark, 3 in the lungs and 1 through the heart. I was so happy, I love impressing myself ! Big Dave and Port didn't believe me when I told them I shot a nice buck, all I got was, yeah whatever, it might be a big doe or a scrapper and the ball-bustin was on. I took it all in stride because I knew what was going to happen when they pulled up to load my deer, I couldn't wait for their expressions. It was an awesome night. Port and I both had one on the ground, It was celebration time ! !
